CAMPUS LIVING LABOROTARY

Living Laboratory UTM Pagoh Campus is a research facility located at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Pagoh Campus. It is designed to be a platform for research and development in sustainable agriculture and natural resource management. The Living Laboratory UTM Pagoh Campus aims to conduct research on sustainable agricultural practices, conservation of biodiversity, and the management of natural resources, including soil, water, and plant resources.

The Living Laboratory UTM Pagoh Campus features various research plots and facilities, including a hydroponic system, a greenhouse, and a portable weather station. These facilities allow researchers to study a range of different agricultural systems and management practices, including organic farming, crop rotation, and the use of alternative crops.

The Living Laboratory UTM Pagoh Campus also includes a range of equipment and instrumentation for measuring various environmental parameters, such as soil moisture, temperature, and nutrient levels. This allows researchers to gain a detailed understanding of the factors that affect crop growth and yields, and to develop new management strategies to improve crop productivity.

PROGRESS ACTIVITY @ UTM PAGOH CAMPUS LIVILA

PROJEK PEMBANGUNAN PROTOTAIP BIODIESEL UNTUK KEGUNAAN JENTERA LADANG DI UTM KAMPUS PAGOH

Sebagai usaha meningkatkan kelestarian, satu projek pembangunan prototaip biodiesel sebagai bahan api untuk kegunaan jentera ladang di ladang penyelidikan UTM Kampus Pagoh telah diadakan. Projek ini adalah merupakan salah satu action plan yang diletakkan di bawah Inisiatif 9: Continue to inculcate the core values of ISES to all staff to achieve excellence holistically dalam agenda Envision@Blueprint UTM Kampus Pagoh 2022.

 Bagi mencapai objektif tersebut, satu jawatankuasa yang terdiri daripada staf ICA, MJARC & LOCARTIC pelbagai skim telah ditubuhkan bagi melaksanakan aktiviti pemprosesan biodiesel daripada minyak masak terpakai yang dikumpulkan hasil kerjasama dengan Kelab Rekreasi Ukhuwah UTM Pagoh. Inisiatif ini membuktikan komitmen warga UTM Kampus Pagoh dalam menyokong usaha kelestarian dan memberi pendedahan kepada warga kampus tentang tanggungjawab inisiatif hijau.

 Sebagai permulaan, proses menghasilkan biodiesel di UTM Kampus Pagoh dijalankan dalam skala kecil di makmal kerana kadar penggunaan yang masih rendah.  Bagi tujuan itu, satu lawatan telah diadakan ke mesin pemprosesan biodiesel di Fakulti Kejuruteraan Tenaga pada 23 Mei 2022 bagi mempelajari dan seterusnya mempraktikkan sendiri pemprosesan tersebut di UTM Pagoh.

 Ujian lapangan penggunaan biodiesel yang dihasilkan terhadap jentera sedia ada di UTM Kampus Pagoh menunjukkan hasil yang memberangsangkan di mana jentera menunjukkan prestasi yang sama seperti penggunaan diesel biasa.  Kesan terhadap asap dan jelaga yang dihasilkan masih dalam tempoh pengujian.  Penggunaan biodiesel dicadangkan untuk dijadikan bahan api utama dalam operasi jentera ladang UTM Kampus Pagoh pada masa akan datang bagi mencapai objektif kelestarian.

 Cabaran terbesar yang dihadapi semasa projek ini dijalankan adalah kualiti minyak masak terpakai (feedstock) yang diperolehi dari pelbagai sumber sukar dikawal dari segi kandungan air, dan bendasing. Ini seterusnya mempengaruhi jenis dan kuantiti pemangkin (catalyst) yang diperlukan untuk mendapat hasil dan kuantiti biodiesel yang memuaskan.  Selain itu, kekurangan sumber dana juga merupakan cabaran lain yang dihadapi, namun dapat diatasi dengan cara mengguna pakai radas makmal yang tersedia, serta menggunakan bahan kimia dan pemangkin yang menghampiri tarikh luput hasil sumbangan daripada unit makmal.

 Buat masa sekarang, aktiviti penghasilan biodiesel ini terpaksa ditangguhkan buat sementara kerana bekalan biodiesel yang terhasil adalah mencukupi untuk kegunaan beberapa bulan akan datang. Ini disebabkan oleh penggunaan jentera ladang yang rendah pada masa ini.  Penggunaan biodiesel dalam operasi loji subcritical waste reactor (SCWR) telah dicadangkan dan mungkin akan dipertimbangkan oleh pihak MJARC.
